Initiated by the Interaction Research Studio at Goldsmiths’, Material Beliefs was a research project that involves a number of
collaborations between engineers and designers. Its intention was that
through the collaborations the engineers’ research could be presented to
the public in engaging ways and that debate around the future of
technology can be opened up. A focus of the project was hybridity
and the boundaries between our bodies and materials.
Hyperkit was commissioned to design an identity and website for the
project, along with a cost-effective solution to publicise a series of
events and seminars. In response to the subject matter we developed a
hybrid typeface – formed of elements from two existing typefaces – which would act as the identity for the project.
Printed in black, the typeface was employed across letters, cards and
labels. A template for A4, A3 and A2 posters was established featuring
an attention-grabbing strapline printed on a tinted stock, allowing the
client to generate new posters themselves, with the colour of the stock
changing every six months.
