We were commissioned by a consortium of Westminster organisations – The
National Gallery, Parliament, Tate Britain, National Portrait Gallery
and the City of Westminster – to design a trail as part of the events
marking the 200 year anniversary of the abolition of the slave trade in
Britain.
The folded leaflet opens out into an A3 map showing a route around
Westminster which takes in 15 sites related to the abolition in some
way. Hand-drawn illustrations of the sites and bold numerals, along
with the hand-rendered map, make for something both characterful and
functional.
The use of ligatures and swash characters in the typography make reference to the historical nature of the subject matter.
