We have designed two titles written by Ruby Tandoh and published by Chatto and Windus.
‘Crumb’ was published in 2014 and the aim was to visualise Ruby’s approach to baking and writing, and create a contemporary classic that had wide appeal. We looked to achieve this through the layout, the art direction of the photography and the choice of materials and printing processes. Photography was key in delivering the correct feel. We chose to avoid presenting cakes on stands but instead developed a more relaxed approach to shooting the dishes — in the process of being made, just out of the oven, or cooling on a rack. The concept was to give a more everyday or snapshot feel, not too staged — similar to an image you might post on Instagram or text to a friend showing them your achievement. ‘Flavour’ was published in 2016 and contains a broader of repertoire of dishes, not baking alone. Further developing the visual identity established in the first publication, this second title is more refined in feel, whilst still very much reflecting Ruby’s ideas about food and life.
