We have designed four publications for Phaidon Press.
‘Recipes from an Italian Butcher’, published in autumn 2017, is a collection of meat recipes from the kitchen of the Silver Spoon. A diamond pattern, reminiscent of a tiled Italian kitchen, is employed on the cover and echoed throughout the book. Illustrations of each animal explains the cuts and their ideal uses.
Published in autumn 2016, ‘The Illustrated Story of England’ is a new edition of a text by Christopher Hibbert, but the photographs have been replaced by characterful illustrations by John Broadley of people and events through history. Each chapter starts with an illuminated letter with objects resembling the characters, and chapter openers feature a grid of motifs relating to the period covered. In a nod to the theme of the book the text is set in the updated New Transport, originally designed in the 1960s for British road signs.
‘Sar – The Essence of Indian Design’, published in spring 2016, brings together a collection of design objects, both traditional and contemporary, and groups them by context such as ‘Wearing’ and ‘Coming and Going’. You can see how many of the items within the book have been crafted and we wanted to reflect this in the construction of the cover and spine. We did this in how we brought together pattern, cloth, paper, colour and metallic ink.
Published in autumn 2014 and extending to over 500 pages, ‘Thailand — The Cookbook’ presents a wealth of authentic Thai recipes collected from more than 200 cooks around the country. We developed a series of Thai-inspired motifs which are used for individual chapters, and a repeat pattern which is silkscreened in gold onto the cloth cover.
