This led to the creation of a light, uncluttered and functional environment where key areas of the salon are framed, as well as the client as he/she moves through the process of having their hair cut.

The framing concept starts with the shopfront where a single neon tube runs the width of the salon. Below this, full-height windows are fitted that display the brightly-lit interior which helps to create a contrast with the street, inviting passers-by to look in and observe the theatre within.

A family of furniture was designed and made from ash, with their forms and personality led by their use and positions within the space. The larger items cater for a variety of different functions, and blocks of colour are used to define these different areas. This in turn creates unique decorative compositions.

The furniture is shown against a backdrop of different materials and paint finishes so as to create differing views throughout the space. The upper and lower levels are unified through the use of a timber floor, with ash laid in a chevron pattern and tinted silver-grey. This is also used to clad the walls on which the mirrors are mounted.

We have also designed printed items, and created artwork to hang on the walls of the salon.

Thu, 08 Mar 2012 11:30:25 Europe/LondonThe Open University - Publicationhttp://www.hyperkit.co.uk/portfolio/0/250/The-Open-University
This publication explores how climate change has been a subject for the arts. It is a 112 page soft cover book, perfect bound and with a cloth spine, printed 2 colour throughout. The main body of the book is a series of transcripts and these contain extended footnotes by the authors. We looked to bring personality to the book through the use of different typefaces for these notes as well as other sections of the book, such as the essays and resources.
Mon, 05 Sep 2011 11:26:11 Europe/LondonCatreus - Visual identity / Stationery / Websitehttp://www.hyperkit.co.uk/portfolio/0/241/CatreusCatreus is a private aircraft charter company. Initial inspiration came from the organisation of objects within the traditional barbershop, as well as workshops, sheds and garages. We developed a collaged aesthetic when designing the space and furniture, combining materials and textures in a very straightforward and functional fashion.

We employed English oak as it is a warm, natural material that can be traditionally crafted; coloured steel items were chosen to contrast with this. Throughout the construction it was important to see how the furniture was made; this is mostly evident in the visible joinery of the oak display frames and the inlaid metal shelves and troughs.

The graphic and geometric nature of the Joe and Co. logo and printed material was conceived as a contemporary substitute to the traditional barbershop patterns such as the stripy red-and-white pole and the black-and-white checked lino floors.

www.joeandco.net
Tue, 02 Nov 2010 12:21:53 Europe/LondonGlenn Howells Architects - Websitehttp://www.hyperkit.co.uk/portfolio/0/229/Glenn-Howells-Architects
A website showcasing the work of this Birmingham- and London-based practice. This typeface was employed across all printed material and exhibition signage.

We also designed the layout of the exhibition itself, and a series of bespoke plinths to display the work which we had fabricated in powder-coated steel. Exhibition interpretation and captions were printed onto wood panels.
Wed, 28 Oct 2009 12:12:36 Europe/LondonRoyal Society of Literature - Visual identity / Print / Websitehttp://www.hyperkit.co.uk/portfolio/0/211/Royal-Society-of-Literature
A rebrand of the Royal Society of Literature which has been in existence for almost 200 years and exists to promote British writing and writers. We revised its typographic identity – whilst still employing the crest that it has used since its foundation – and designed a range of print material. These use traditional book sizes (such as Imperial Quarto and Crown Octavo) and an offwhite paper stock to give the material more relevance to the subject and its heritage. We also designed and developed a database-driven website with a bespoke Content Management System to allow staff at the RSL to add and edit content. The site features online donations and audio files of many past lectures.

www.rslit.org
Mon, 28 Sep 2009 13:59:01 Europe/LondonHouse of Propellers - Visual identity / Print / Websitehttp://www.hyperkit.co.uk/portfolio/0/204/House-of-Propellers
An identity for a Clerkenwell gallery space. Materials and processes were considered, in order to be relevant to the work of the firm. Wallets containing a series of project cards are constructed using greyboard and die-cut with the identity allowing a glimpse of what is inside. Greyboard is also used for the business cards, and a grey paper stock for the letterheads and compliment slips. All stationery items are foil-blocked in white.
Fri, 15 May 2009 11:23:30 Europe/London
