Electricity is invisible, but its effects are everywhere. Electricity: The Spark of Life at the Wellcome Collection explored how this force has shaped science, technology and modern life. We developed the exhibition identity around the idea of making electricity visible. Working with the curators, exhibition architects Nissen Richards and lighting consultants Arup, we translated its energy, movement and unpredictability into a visual and physical language. A custom typeface formed the basis of the identity, with its forms drawing on the visual character of electricity. At the entrance, a sign with three etched acrylic panels uses LEDs to bring the lettering to life, creating the effect of an electrical spark moving through the type. The same language extends across the glass frontage and throughout the exhibition in captions and text panels that are punctuated by copper detailing.
